Located in the centre of the southern part of the Istrian peninsula, known as the historical border of the former Istrian Dionysus of Poreč, Pula and Pićan, the medieval Svetvinčenat is mystical and magical.

Since the first Benedictine settlers began to cultivate the red soil in a strategic position in the 6th century, Svetvinčenat (SavičentaSanvincenti) has developed at the intersection of the roads between Pazin and Pula. A place named after Sv. Vincent and the eponymous medieval abbey, first officially mentioned in the 10th century (965).

Halfway west and east coast, Svetvinčenat has historically played a very important role in trade and production. It was a destination not only for merchants, soldiers and knights but also for wealthy travelers, travel writers or artists. The cross-section of artificial architecture with the dominance of medieval elements will attract all seekers of picturesque places.

A walk through Svetvinčenat provides…enjoyment of medieval elements

Svetvinčenat is a favorite place of the Putokoza team, as it inspires us with each new visit. The colorful streets next to the renaissance houses make this place magical. It will take us back to the past, showing us life in the Middle Ages, when they were filled with manufactories or merchants. Since the time of that medieval atmosphere, Svetvinčenat has certainly retained its authenticity. In addition, it has a manifestation “Choice of the most beautiful goat” , making it one of the sufficient reasons why we visit it and highlight it on Putokoza, right?

City square

With a cistern in the middle, Placa Square is marked by Renaissance architecture. It is surrounded by key medieval sights: the Morosini-Grimani castle, the parish church, a loggia and a number of Renaissance houses. The loggia dates from the 18th century, and a carved cistern located in the center of the square was built in 1808.

Morosini-Grimani Castle

The history of the 13th century castle that dominates the medieval town can be learned today through play in animated stylesA multimedia exhibition through 3D animation of the Pillar of Shame, coronation, massive attack or sword forging accompanying the musical rhythm represents the past of the castle which is being ravaged several times. After being demolished in 1329, Francesco Morosini restored the castle in 1485 in the Renaissance style. Similar to the one in Bale, the heiresses in 1560 took on a new name by moving to the Venetian family – Grimani, whose coat of arms is located just above the entrance. The towers that were key to defending the city are still the dominant points.

After climbing the balcony built near the load-bearing wall, we peek into the ” Captain’s Room” with artistic features. The story of the witch Mare and the equestrian games simulate a race similar to today’s ” Ring Race”. The castle houses a collection of cultural and historical ancient weapons ” Ferlin ” (14th – 19th century).

The castle, which retains its medieval appearance, is considered one of the best-preserved castles on the peninsula. It could accommodate up to 200 horsemen. He owned weapons depots, a steward’s apartment, and a stable. And finally, after learning all that history, enjoying the view follows.

Yes, like any other, this castle reveals horizons. And not only will you be able to make the most picturesque postcard of Svetvincenat, during a clear sunny day the view from the castle will reach the Učka mountain, the eastern and even the western coast of Istria at the same time. And of course, since there was no modern technology in the Middle Ages, there is no need for a drone to take beautiful aerial photographs!

The house of the witch Mare

Located at the entrance to the city, the Mare Witch House attracts visitors with its diverse cultural heritage, presenting the history of Svetvinčenat with 3D mapping as in a castle. “Legend of the Unknown Horseman” will take the visitor back to the distant but mystical Middle Ages. The story is about Mare Radolovich, a 17th-century witch-hunt victim portrayed by her ghost. However, apart from the story that takes us back to the mystical Middle Ages, the main role in the defense of the Morosini-Grimani castle, with the help of virtual shooting, is given to the visitor. The house was supplemented in 2020 with the main content of an interactive notebook of mythical creatures of Istria.

Svetvinčenat offers an opportunity to explore diverse church architecture and historic frescoes

Svetvinčenat is considered to be probably one of the best urban planning medieval towns in Istria, designed by Renaissance Venetian architects. However, today it retains churches that represent different styles of construction throughout history as well as frescoes.

Parish Church of the Annunciation

Located in the eastern part of the square, the single-nave church from the 16th century is one of the most beautiful Renaissance in Istria. The three-leafed Renaissance facade is made of Istrian stone. The main altar was built with donations from the Grimani family.

Frescoes in the church of St. Vincent and other smaller churches

The Romanesque single-nave church of the same name as the place has three apses and dates from the 12th century. Hidden among tall and quiet cypresses, the church dedicated to St. Vincent, the patron saint of the place, is the oldest preserved building in Svetvincenat. Three layers of frescoes mainly from the end of the 13th century decorate the interior of the church, representing one of the most extensive Istrian cycles of Romanesque frescoes under Byzantine influence. They are written to Master Ognoben of Travis. Take a walk in silence as you catch the shadows of the sun’s rays. We can still hear the voices of the Benedictine past saying their famous motto ” Ora et Labora ” (pray and work).

Church dedicated to St. Catherine at the eastern entrance to the city, is decorated with frescoes from the early 15th century. It was built in the 14th century. Along with the 18th century porch, it is a magnificent example of Istrian Romanesque folk art characterized by pointed arches. We especially love them on hot summer days because they provide good shelter from the sun. On the road along the main square, opposite the main city loggia is the church of St. Anthony the Abbot from the 14th century. It belongs to the Gothic folk style. Another of the small churches of St. Roka from 1622 belongs to a typical work of medieval Istrian architecture.

The best way to truly feel Svetvinčenat is to join one of its lively local events

In recent years, this place has been characterized by world artists as a place of films. In doing so, the beautiful Renaissance Square became famous in scenes, internationally awarded around the world. Therefore, it is not surprising that Svetvinčenat has its own festivals and summer events. Throughout the year, many concerts and events are held in the castle or town square.

The medieval festival is the king of manifestations. It attracts hundreds of costumed participants – nobles, knights, archers, horsemen and medieval ladies. The staff and knights represent the everyday atmosphere of the medieval atmosphere. What we like the most though is the medieval fair. Visitors will be able to learn more about old crafts and skills, taste traditional dishes, but also try to use a bow and arrow, crossbow and many other traditional games.

The selection of the most beautiful Goat is probably one of the most favorite events for Putokoza, not only in Svetvinčenat but also in general. The name says it all, there is a selection of the most beautiful goat, and Putokoza loves to participate and have fun with his company. Svetvinčenat is also the host of the International Festival of Non-Verbal Theater and Dance. Founded in 2000, with its long tradition, the festival has become a favorite gathering place of dance experts and dance lovers. Another festival known as the “Rožica Festival “, presents a variety of flowers typical of Istria and the surrounding area, while for example the gastro fair cheese festival attracts all those who want to taste Istrian cheese, from local pastures.
